Labor burden is what an hour of field labor costs you beyond the wage: payroll taxes, workers comp, health insurance and other benefits. There are two ways to price it, and the right one depends on how your books are set up.
✅ Box checked: your books keep field-labor burden in its own accounts (for example, field payroll taxes and workers comp in Cost of Goods Sold, apart from office payroll costs). The app adds burden to every labor line using the costs below, so each job pays for its own labor hours. This is the most accurate. When you import your Profit & Loss for the Overhead Calculator, mark those accounts Direct Cost so they aren't counted in overhead too.
⬜ Box unchecked: your books lump all payroll taxes and insurance together. Labor is priced at bare wages, and burden is recovered through your overhead rate instead (mark those accounts Overhead). This is simpler but less accurate: jobs that are mostly labor come out underpriced, and jobs that are mostly materials overpriced.
💡 To move to the checked way, your bookkeeper can use your payroll reports to split field burden out of the payroll tax and insurance accounts, adjust the Profit & Loss before you import it, and post them separately from then on.
Each cost as a percent of wages. Every labor category uses these unless you change one in that category's Edit window. Get your workers comp rates from your insurance agent; they vary a lot by trade.
Your labor categories (trades) and their base wage. Each uses the Default Labor Burden Costs above; to change a cost for one category (for example, a different workers comp rate), use its Edit button.
Import your Profit & Loss statement to calculate an accurate overhead rate based on your actual business expenses.
Define overhead rates for different divisions, locations, or types of work. Use this if your business has distinct operations with different overhead structures.
